Tool will identify spelling errors only, with no grammar correction or writing assistance
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is to introduce a spell check tool for SQE2 written assessments, with the tool set to be trialled during the July 2026 assessment window.
The regulator said the feature has been added to the Pearson assessment platform used for SQE2 written exams and is intended to help candidates identify spelling mistakes in line with recommendations made by the SQE Independent Reviewer.
However, the SRA stressed that the tool will have limited functionality. It will identify spelling errors only and will not provide grammar correction, writing assistance or content suggestions.
The move follows wider discussions about assessment accessibility and consistency within the Solicitors Qualifying Examination framework. The SRA’s latest SQE annual report had previously noted that work was underway to introduce spell check as a standard feature for SQE2 written assessments, following bespoke arrangements made in some cases.
While the trial is underway, the existing approach to language standards in SQE2 written assessments will remain unchanged. The regulator said current guidance on “clear, precise, concise and acceptable language” will continue to apply throughout the July 2026 sitting and beyond until further notice.
The relevant section of the SQE2 assessment specification has been updated to reflect the availability of the spell check function while preserving the existing expectations around spelling, grammar and written communication standards.
Candidates will be able to test the feature in advance on the SQE2 Pearson practice platform, accessible through the regulator’s SQE2 sample questions page, with instructions also available within the assessment software.
The SRA said further information about the spell check function will be provided for SQE2 assessment windows after July 2026, suggesting the regulator will review the outcome of the initial trial before deciding on longer-term implementation.
