Regulator appoints Lester Aldridge LLP as intervening agent to protect client interests
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has intervened in the practice of solicitor John Osman Ward following his death earlier this year. The regulator confirmed on 22 May 2026 that it had formally intervened into the practice of Osman Ward & Sons, based at 37 Church Road, Hove, East Sussex.
According to the SRA’s published decision notice, the intervention was carried out under paragraph 1(1)(m) of Schedule 1 to the Solicitors Act 1974. The regulator stated that the action was necessary to protect the interests of clients, former clients, and beneficiaries of any trust where Mr Ward acted as trustee.
The SRA confirmed that Mr Ward died on 9 April 2026. Osman Ward & Sons was identified in the notice as the firm operating at the time of the intervention and at the time of the matters giving rise to the regulatory action. As part of the intervention process, the SRA appointed Lester Aldridge LLP as the intervening agent. The appointment has been handled through Chris Evans of Lester Aldridge LLP, based at Russell House, Oxford Road, Bournemouth.
The regulator also provided contact details for enquiries relating to the intervention, including telephone and email information for the appointed intervention team. An SRA intervention is one of the regulator’s most significant enforcement powers and results in a legal practice immediately ceasing to operate. When an intervention takes place, the SRA takes possession of client files and documents in order to protect client interests and preserve public confidence in legal services.
The intervention process may also involve arrangements for the storage, retrieval, or transfer of client papers, alongside steps to manage ongoing matters previously handled by the firm. The SRA did not disclose further details regarding the firm’s client matters or the number of files involved in the intervention. The regulator stated that the decision was reached directly by the SRA and published on the same day as the intervention outcome date.
Regulatory interventions following the death of a sole practitioner or principal solicitor are not uncommon where the SRA considers immediate steps necessary to safeguard client interests and ensure proper handling of ongoing legal matters. The intervention into Osman Ward & Sons now places responsibility for managing the firm’s files and regulatory closure arrangements under the supervision of the appointed intervention agent and the SRA.
