Solicitor barred from sole practice under SRA conditions

SRA places conditions on Simon Hall’s 2025/26 practising certificate

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has imposed conditions on the practising certificate of solicitor Simon Barrie Hall.

The decision, dated 22 February 2026 and published on 26 February 2026, was made under the regulator’s control of practice powers. The outcome was reached by the SRA decision.

Under the conditions applied to his 2025/2026 practising certificate, Mr Hall is prohibited from operating as a sole practitioner, sole solicitor manager or sole solicitor owner of an authorised body. He is also barred from practising on his own account under regulation 10.2(a) or (b) of the SRA Authorisation of Individuals Regulations.

The SRA stated that the conditions are necessary in the public interest and are reasonable and proportionate. In reaching its decision, the regulator had regard to the purposes set out in regulation 7 of the SRA Authorisation of Individuals Regulations, as well as the regulatory objectives and principles governing regulatory activities contained in section 28 of the Legal Services Act 2007.

No further details of the underlying circumstances were provided in the published outcome notice.

Control of practice conditions is a regulatory measure designed to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with professional standards. They can restrict the manner in which a solicitor practises, including preventing independent practice or limiting managerial responsibilities within authorised bodies.

The SRA has the power to impose such conditions where it considers it necessary to protect the public, maintain confidence in the profession, or support compliance with regulatory requirements.

The published notice confirms that the terms used in the conditions are defined in the SRA Glossary, which forms part of the SRA’s regulatory framework.

The restrictions apply for the duration of the 2025/2026 practising certificate unless varied or removed by the regulator.
