Description

11 South Square is a distinguished set of chambers specialising in intellectual property law, with additional expertise in media and information technology. Recognised for its involvement in precedent-setting cases across all areas of IP law, the set is noted for the high quality of its advocacy and legal advice.

Founded in 1923 by Sir Stafford Cripps, 11 South Square currently comprises 16 members, including five King's Counsel, under the leadership of Iain Purvis KC. The set has a strong tradition of judicial appointments, with former members including High Court judges and Lords Justices such as Henry Carr, Mr Justice Arnold, Richard Hacon, Lord Justice Floyd, and the late Lord Justice Pumfrey.

Its barristers regularly appear before the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, and the UK Intellectual Property Office, as well as the European Patent Office and European Union courts. The set has particular strength in patent litigation requiring technical expertise in science, technology, and software, and is frequently involved in complex IT disputes.

Members handle a broad range of IP matters, including copyright, trade marks, performers' rights, confidential information, privacy, personality rights, and celebrity endorsements. They have also been at the forefront of cases concerning unregistered design rights, database rights, and data protection law, including representation before the Information Tribunal.

Notable recent cases include Wobben Properties GmbH v Siemens, Teva (UK) Ltd v Gilead Sciences Inc, Victoria Plum Ltd v Victorian Plumbing Ltd, Cartier International AG v British Sky Broadcasting Ltd, and Edwards Life Sciences v Boston Scientific, among others.
