Calum Nisbet will lead Birmingham Law Society as it plans its next phase of development
Birmingham Law Society Appoints Calum Nisbet as its new Chief Executive, with the organisation saying the appointment will support its future development and strengthen its role across the legal profession in the West Midlands.
The appointment was announced by the Board of Directors of Birmingham Law Society (BLS), which described Nisbet as bringing extensive experience in membership organisations and leadership roles from across the region.
Nisbet previously served as West Midlands Regional Director for the Institute of Directors and Commercial Director for the Black Country Chamber of Commerce. He is currently Chief Executive of The Kaleidoscope Plus Group, a West Midlands-based charity focused on mental health and wellbeing across the business, education and public sectors. He also serves as a Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands.
The appointment represents a change in executive leadership for Birmingham Law Society. Members can expect the Society’s strategic direction to be led by its new Chief Executive, although the announcement does not set out any immediate changes to governance or membership arrangements.
BLS Chair Peter Brewer welcomed the appointment, saying the Society had secured a leader with significant experience in regional membership organisations.
He said he was “absolutely delighted” that Birmingham Law Society had recruited someone of Nisbet’s calibre into the senior role, adding that Nisbet was well known across Birmingham and the wider region and would bring fresh ideas and vision as the Society develops over the coming years. Brewer also said the Board and the Society’s officers were looking forward to working with him.
Responding to his appointment, Nisbet said he was honoured to be joining Birmingham Law Society as Chief Executive.
He said that throughout his career he had focused on bringing people together, building strong partnerships and helping organisations achieve their ambitions. He added that he intends to build on Birmingham Law Society’s long-standing heritage while embracing opportunities for innovation, collaboration and growth.
Nisbet also highlighted supporting the next generation of legal professionals as one of his priorities. He said he wants to help ensure aspiring lawyers have access to opportunities, professional networks and the inspiration needed to build successful careers.
He described Birmingham Law Society as being well placed to act as a convenor for the city by bringing together the legal profession and the wider professional services community. According to Nisbet, strengthening those relationships can help encourage investment, growth and innovation across the West Midlands.
Looking ahead, he said there is an opportunity to strengthen Birmingham’s voice nationally, champion the Society’s members and demonstrate the contribution that professional services make to the prosperity and success of both the city and the wider region.
Birmingham Law Society traces its history back more than 200 years and represents more than 9,000 members, making it the largest provincial law society in England and Wales. The Society said Nisbet’s appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter as it continues to support its membership and develop its role within the regional legal community.
