Write for Solicitor News

Solicitor News welcomes contributions from solicitors, barristers, academics, legal professionals, journalists and subject-matter experts with insight into developments affecting the UK legal sector.

We publish original, well-informed articles that provide analysis, commentary or perspective on law, regulation, policy and legal practice in UK. Submissions should be relevant to solicitors and the wider legal profession, and should contribute meaningfully to informed, responsible discussion of current legal issues.

What We Publish

Solicitor News provides independent, factual and analytical coverage of matters shaping the UK legal profession. Our content focuses on substance, accuracy and professional relevance rather than promotion.

We publish:

  • Developments in law, regulation and professional standards
  • News and analysis concerning solicitors, barristers, regulators and the courts
  • Commentary on policy reform, access to justice and the administration of justice
  • Practice-related issues affecting law firms and legal professionals
  • Informed opinion from experienced practitioners, academics and aspiring lawyers, where contributions offer thoughtful insight into legal education, qualification routes and early-career issues

All articles should be balanced, clearly written and evidence-based, with an emphasis on insight and analysis rather than marketing or advocacy.

Submission Guidelines

To be considered for publication, submissions must meet the following requirements:

  • Articles must be original and not published elsewhere
  • Content should be factually accurate, well-researched and clearly structured
  • Submissions must relate to UK law, regulation, policy or legal practice
  • Opinion pieces should be reasoned and supported by evidence where appropriate
  • Where factual assertions, statistics or legal developments are discussed, contributors should cite primary or authoritative sources (such as legislation, case law, regulators or public bodies)
  • Recommended length is 800–1,000 words
  • Shorter analysis pieces (600–800 words) may be accepted where appropriate
  • Longer submissions may be considered at the editor’s discretion
  • Promotional, marketing or advertorial content will not be accepted
  • Contributors must disclose any relevant conflicts of interest, including professional or commercial connections related to the subject matter

Note

Solicitor News reserves the right to edit submissions for clarity, length, legal risk and house style.

All submissions are reviewed by the editorial team. Publication decisions are at the sole discretion of the editor, and contributors may be contacted to clarify or amend content prior to publication.

Legal Responsibility and Defamation

  • Solicitor News operates in accordance with UK defamation law and responsible legal journalism standards.
  • Contributors are responsible for ensuring that their submissions:
  • Do not contain defamatory, misleading or unlawful statements
  • Treat individuals and organisations fairly and accurately
  • Are supported by reliable evidence where allegations, criticism or reputational issues are discussed
  • Submissions that pose legal risk or fall below these standards will not be published.

Why an Article May Be Declined

On occasion, we may be unable to publish an article, even where an author has been encouraged to submit.

Common reasons include::

  • The content is defamatory, legally problematic or insufficiently supported
  • The article does not align with our editorial tone or professional focus
  • The length is inappropriate for the subject matter
  • The submission differs materially from what was proposed
  • The analysis does not meet our editorial standards of depth or relevance
  • The topic has been overtaken by events
  • The article promotes a specific product, service, firm or individual
  • Editorial priorities require us to focus on other developments at that time

Use of AI and Editorial Expectations

We recognise that generative AI tools are now widely used as drafting and research aids. Solicitor News does not operate a blanket prohibition on the use of AI.

  • Submissions that rely heavily on AI-generated text may be less likely to be accepted or may require substantial revision
  • Regardless of the tools used, contributors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, legal integrity and professional quality of their work
  • Articles must demonstrate independent thought, insight and editorial judgement.

Rights and Republishing

By submitting an article, contributors grant Solicitor News the right to publish, edit and archive the content on our website and associated platforms. Any subsequent republication elsewhere should acknowledge Solicitor News as the original publisher.
