JAC seeks solicitors, barristers, and CILEX fellows to apply for recorder roles with at least seven years of post-qualification experience

The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) has launched a recruitment campaign to fill 128 Recorder roles across England and Wales. The vacancies are spread across criminal, civil, and family jurisdictions, presenting a significant opportunity for solicitors, barristers, and Fellows of CILEX to advance their legal careers.

The Recorder role is a prestigious judicial appointment that requires “significant intellectual ability, flexibility of mind, and an ability to acquire new skills and apply existing skills in new ways,” according to the JAC. Successful applicants will be expected to handle trials, interlocutory hearings, and case management, contributing to the judicial process through both appeals and substantive hearings. They will also be required to actively manage cases while determining claims at trial, including appeals from Magistrates’ Courts and district judges.

Applicants must have at least seven years of post-qualification experience in law, with the ability to offer a reasonable commitment, typically for four years, before the statutory retirement age of 75. Despite the demanding nature of the role, the JAC assures that applicants from diverse legal backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with experience in specific jurisdictions not being a requirement. The commission is focused on merit-based selections, ensuring that all candidates have the intellectual ability, flexibility, and skillset required to excel in a judicial capacity.

As Recorders are appointed nationally and allocated by the Lady Chief Justice to a circuit within England and Wales, successful candidates will be expected to serve across various locations. The JAC aims to ensure a broad representation from all legal practitioners, reflecting the diverse nature of modern case law. Applicants will also have the opportunity to maintain their current practices as solicitors, barristers, or CILEX lawyers while fulfilling their Recorder duties.

The application window for these roles closes at 1:00 pm on Thursday, 14 May 2026, and those interested are encouraged to submit their applications via the official JAC website. This announcement follows a broader effort to fill judicial vacancies and ensure that the legal system continues to operate with transparency and fairness.

The JAC emphasises that this recruitment campaign is an essential part of maintaining a well-rounded judiciary, ensuring that those appointed have the necessary skills and experience to contribute effectively to the legal process. Applicants will be considered based on their merit, with the final deployment decisions made by the Senior Presiding Judge.
