Private equity-backed Orwins debuts with Clarkslegal deal

BBS Law and Carter Bond have rebranded as Orwins as the group expands through investment in Reading firm Clarkslegal

Private equity firm Aliter Capital has unveiled a new legal services group, Orwins, combining BBS Law and Carter Bond while expanding with an investment in Reading commercial firm Clarkslegal.

The new brand brings together Manchester-based BBS Law, backed by Aliter since October 2024, and London’s Carter Bond, in which the investor acquired a stake last year. Clarkslegal, a nine-partner commercial practice, is set to join the Orwins brand later this year

Clarkslegal, a Reading-headquartered commercial practice, advises on areas including employment, corporate, commercial property and litigation. The deal takes the enlarged group to close to 150 staff across Manchester, London and Reading, with combined revenues of around £23m and stated ambitions to exceed £50m turnover within two years.

Orwins chief executive Dov Black described the rebrand as an important milestone in the group’s development and positioned it as the foundation for its next phase of growth.

“The launch of our new identity comes at a pivotal time for the business,” he said. “We are totally enthused about the new branding, which reflects our core values and creates the ideal foundations for future growth.”

The group said the Orwins brand reflects its strategy of building a full-service national legal practice focused on high-growth businesses and high-net-worth clients, while maintaining an emphasis on integration, operational readiness and cultural alignment as consolidation plans continue.

Addressing the Clarkslegal investment, Black said the firms shared a strong strategic and cultural fit.

“From the outset, there was clear cultural alignment between our two firms,” he said. “Clarkslegal has an entrepreneurial, client-focused ethos very similar to our own and a complementary client base. They also have an exceptionally strong, talented team which further enhances the breadth and depth of our service offer.”

Monica Atwal, managing partner of Clarkslegal, said the investment would strengthen the firm’s service offering and provide a platform for future development.

“We are thrilled to be part of this exciting new chapter,” she said. “BBS Law and Carter Bond, now united under Orwins, share a common ethos, culture and ambition with Clarkslegal. This investment will enable us to enhance the services we provide to our valued clients now and in the future, while giving our team a strong platform on which we can grow and thrive.”

Aliter Capital said it is working closely with the team at Orwins on several further investments this year, aiming to expand the firm’s regional coverage across the UK.

Greig Brown, partner at Aliter Capital, explained: “It’s been a hugely positive time for Orwins, with the completion of another important investment and the simultaneous launch of its exciting new brand. Both events are vital steps in our journey to create a market leading provider of legal services, with a truly national footprint.”
