Birmingham Law Society unveils 2026 Diversity and Inclusion Scheme

Scheme offers funding, mentoring and work experience to aspiring lawyers from disadvantaged backgrounds

The Birmingham Law Society (BLS) has launched its 2026 Diversity and Inclusion Scheme (DIS), reaffirming its commitment to widening access to the legal profession for individuals from disadvantaged and under‑represented backgrounds. The scheme was announced on 30 April 2026 as part of the society’s ongoing efforts to improve social mobility and diversity within the regional legal community.

Originally established in 2020, the DIS has sought to identify and support talented aspiring lawyers who face barriers to entering the profession. The core aim of the programme remains to address structural obstacles that can limit access for those without financial means or established professional networks.

For 2026, BLS said the scheme will provide financial support to successful applicants pursuing either the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or preparation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). In addition to funding, candidates will be offered real‑world work experience opportunities, vacation scheme placements, and mentoring with partner firms.

The 2026 programme will continue its partnership with The University of Law, The College of Legal Practice and Higgs LLP organisations that have previously supported the initiative since its inception. This year, BLS welcomed a new partner, Devonshires, to assist with placements and support.

Sharon Thandi, a member of BLS’s Social Mobility Sub‑Committee and lead for the scheme, said she was “delighted that the Diversity and Inclusion Scheme is running for a further year,” underlining the society’s ongoing commitment to helping aspiring lawyers overcome barriers and contribute to the legal community.

Applications for the 2026 scheme opened on 30 April 2026 and are set to close on 30 May 2026. The initiative forms part of a broader push by the legal profession to foster diversity and ensure that people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to enter and succeed in law
