Regulator issues alert over fake emails linked to cryptocurrency ‘recovery’

The SRA warns of scam emails misusing a law firm’s name in crypto asset recovery claims

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has issued a public warning after identifying a series of scam emails misusing the name and details of Wealth Recovery Solicitors Limited in connection with purported cryptocurrency recovery services.

In an alert dated 9 February 2026, the regulator said it had seen several emails sent to members of the public falsely claiming to originate from Wealth Recovery Solicitors Limited. The emails refer to the supposed recovery of cryptocurrency security and assets and misuse details of the genuine firm, including its company and SRA numbers, as well as references to the firm’s legitimate online presence.

According to the SRA, the emails have been sent from a range of addresses and individuals claiming to hold professional roles. These include a person calling himself Steve Parker, who purports to be a cybercrime investigator and has used the email addresses jinvestigator@gmail.com and steve.federalsolicitor@gmail.com. Other emails were sent by individuals claiming to be Eva Bakker, using eva.bakker@recofina.co, and Kevin Bush, who also claims to be a cybercrime investigator and has used the email address bill.smith.gci@gmail.com.

The regulator has also identified emails from an individual claiming to be Michael Mahone, who purports to be an accounts manager at UNC Hospital in the United States. That correspondence was sent from the address Michaelmahone827@gmail.com and included a US telephone number and fax number. The SRA confirmed that none of these contact details are connected to any firm or individual authorised or regulated by the regulator.

In addition, the SRA has seen a document purporting to be issued by a genuine solicitor, providing what is described as a “formal guarantee” for a transaction. The document was sent from the email address nicroe9@gmail.com and misuses the name of the genuine solicitor. The correspondence also refers to an individual named Donnie Powell, described as an appointed agent in relation to the matter.

The regulator has further been informed that additional emails purporting to be from the same solicitor have been sent to members of the public offering assistance with the recovery of cryptocurrency. Reports have also been received of an individual calling herself Eva Williams contacting members of the public and claiming to be a senior recovery specialist from the firm.

The SRA confirmed that any business or transaction conducted through the email addresses, telephone numbers or fax numbers referred to in the warning is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised or regulated by the SRA.

The regulator said it does authorise and regulate a genuine firm of solicitors called Wealth Recovery Solicitors Limited, which is based in Manchester, and a genuine solicitor named Nicolas Roe, who is employed by that firm. Neither the firm nor the solicitor have no connection to the correspondence or documents described in the warning.

The SRA has advised members of the public to exercise caution where a firm’s or individual’s identity appears to have been copied or cloned. Anyone receiving correspondence of the type described is urged to carry out their own due diligence by verifying regulatory status through reliable means before engaging in any transaction.
